The objective of our business is to provide a high quality and reliable service for our customers.
Our Employees
Employees play an important role in any business. Here at J Chaplow and Sons we still are very much a family firm with many
members of our work force carrying on the family tradition. We have taken on more employees over the years to meet the demands,
most choose to remain with us for the long term. This low turn over of staff ensures that you the customer gets the benefit
of a long serving team which strives to provide a level of service to exceed your expectations. After over 125 years in business

Our Company
Founded in 1880, the company began offering a wide range of services including Joiners, Carpenters, Wheelwrights, Blacksmiths
and Woodturning. We were originally based at New Hutton before moving to todays premises at Helsington Mills. The company
moved into haulage using steam traction engines to deliver slate and building materials. The traction engines were also put
to use in the agricultural industry, threshing and other works being carried out on local farms. As the agricultural work
declined, we moved into road surfacing. Steam rollers were purchased and placed on hire to Westmorland County Council, at
one time six ten ton rollers were in operation. During the war years these were used for runway construction. Sadly the steam
driven vehicles were scrapped when they were replaced by petrol and diesel engine machinery.
We now operate a modern fleet of vehicles which are used to provide the high standards of workmanship which our reputation
is built on. We choose to remain at a size which still offers personal attention to all of our customers and hope to continue
to offer our services to the local area for many more years to come.
Our premises

home for many years and provides us with a ideal operating base.
