Founded in 1880, the company began offering a wide range of services including Joiners, Carpenters, Wheelwrights, Blacksmiths and Woodturning. We were originally based at New Hutton before moving to todays premises at Helsington Mills. The company moved into haulage using steam traction engines to deliver slate and building materials. The traction engines were also put to use in the agricultural industry, threshing and other works being carried out on local farms. As the agricultural work declined, we moved into road surfacing. Steam rollers were purchased and placed on hire to Westmorland County Council, at one time six ten ton rollers were in operation. During the war years these were used for runway construction. Sadly the steam driven vehicles were scrapped when they were replaced by petrol and diesel engine machinery. We now operate a modern fleet of vehicles which are used to provide the high standards of workmanship which our reputation is built on. Whilst tarmac roads and driveways have for many years remained our core service we now offer many alternative surfaces and all associated groundworks. We choose to remain at a size which still offers personal attention to all of our customers and hope to continue to offer our services to the local area for many more years to come. With our long history and enviable reputation you can be assured that should any problems arise our team with do their utmost to put things right.
Still a family run business, the current directors Darren and Phil Chaplow have worked through the ranks for many years so are fully conversant with all aspects of the work we are involved in. Today the next generation are starting at the bottom to learn the trade. We aim to have all workers trained in health and safety with a CSCS card to allow them on sites with a short time frame. Currently we have 40% of our staff taking NVQ’s which will benefit both the staff and company in the longer term. Should you be interested in joining us please contact the office for any current vacancies.
